What Is Spruce and Is It Good for Wooden Buildings?

Softwood is among the most commonly used materials in construction. A good example is spruce in garden buildings. Here’s what you need to know.

What is Spruce?

Spruce is the common name for trees in the genus Picea — a group of evergreen conifers. From a visual standpoint, it’s pale, from creamy white to light yellow-brown, with a subtle, silky sheen.

It yellows and darkens, though, when exposed to sunlight. Look closely and you’ll see its annual growth rings; the fibres themselves tend to run straight, which is what gives spruce its even grain.

In its tree form, spruce has needle-like leaves that stay on year-round, unlike broad-leaved trees that shed theirs each autumn. That’s a useful clue, but it isn’t the dividing line between softwood and hardwood. Softwood means the timber came from a conifer, and hardwood from a broad-leaved tree — it’s about the type of tree, not how hard the wood feels, and not whether it keeps its leaves. Larch is a softwood that drops its needles every autumn; holly is an evergreen hardwood.

Norway spruce (Picea abies), the main European species, usually reaches 30–40 metres with a straight, upright trunk, and the tallest specimens pass 50 metres. It grows across northern and central Europe.

Strengths and Benefits of Spruce Wood

Spruce sits at the lighter end of the timber scale, with a dried density of roughly 400–470 kg/m³. That makes it easy to handle while still stiff for its weight — the appeal is its strength-to-weight ratio, not softness.

Working with it is straightforward—another point in its favour for builders and manufacturers. The wood also dries fast and resists cracking better than some alternatives, with less chance of warping or twisting.

One more thing about spruce is its reliability. The trees grow fast and straight and are planted at scale across Europe, which supports a steady supply. That availability is what keeps it cheaper than scarcer or slower-growing softwoods such as larch. It’s why spruce is the main material in so many garden buildings at this price point.

But the advantages don’t stop here.

Spruce in Garden Buildings

Spruce turns up everywhere in garden buildings, from wooden sheds to summerhouses and log cabins, to name a few, and for good reasons. Here’s how:

Framing

The frame holds everything above ground, so the timber needs to be strong but stays on the lighter side. Spruce ticks that box. It’s got enough strength to support the weight of the roof and walls without overloading the base.

For self-build kits or flat-packed sheds, that makes a real difference. It’s easier to put up and rarely calls for heavy-duty tools or fixings.

Cladding

Cladding needs to stay in place and keep out the weather. Spruce works well here because it’s stable. As mentioned, it doesn’t warp or twist as much as some other softwoods. That helps the boards stay flush and secure, so there’s less chance of water finding a way in. Spruce isn’t naturally durable on its own, though, so cladding has to be treated, and kept treated, to last outdoors.

It also gives a clean, even finish outside, which matters if you’re putting the building somewhere visible, like a garden or allotment.

Panelling

Inside, spruce is a solid option for wall panelling. It has a smooth surface and a pale colour that takes stains, paints, and wood treatments well.

So, whether you want to keep the natural look, add a splash of colour, or protect it from damp, it gives you a lot of flexibility. This makes it a practical choice for hobby rooms or offices where you want the interior to look decent and hold up to use.

Spruce is also easy to repair or replace if needed, such as swapping out the panels. It’s cost-effective too, being widely available. This helps if you’re trying to keep the budget sensible without going for low-grade timber.

So when you’re shopping for wooden summerhouses, spruce is a sound starting point — but the species alone doesn’t tell you everything. Cladding thickness, timber grade and the treatment applied matter just as much.

Spruce vs Pine

Compared to pine, spruce moves slightly less with changes in moisture, and it carries far less resin, so paint and stain sit on it more predictably (it still needs protecting either way). That helps keep your garden building stable and reduces the chance of gaps or warping over time. Its knots also tend to be smaller and tighter than pine’s, and its texture more even, which gives a cleaner, more uniform look.

Pine is harder and denser, and its heartwood is more naturally durable than spruce, which has very little resistance to rot when left untreated. The trade-off is more resin, larger knots and a less even texture, which can make it messier to cut and finish.

Both grow quickly and are widely available, which is what makes them cost-effective for garden buildings. Where the two differ on price, it’s usually down to local supply and demand rather than growth rate.
